The harmless dog was pounded several times, before being tied to a pole and set on fire. But that was not all. The soldiers later posed for photos, while laughing and cheering. If you take a closer look, you will see that everyone is having a great time. At the end of the barbecue, thay made another Facebook post, bragging about how ‘delicios’ the meat was.
The story has made the headlines in many publications around the world, but in spite of the media attention, no punishment has been applied up to this point. Indonesia lacks even the most basic animal welfare laws and dog meat is still legal and widely consumed. There are no laws against the dog meat trade. In Western countries, the perpetrators would have been immediately indicted and sentenced to prison. In Indonesia, they are never even investigated.
Unfortunately, dog meat barbecues are extremely frequent in the country. Thousands of dogs are cooked each year for their meat in the most vicious ways possible and their suffering is simply ridiculous and outrageous.
Please show your support for a profound and meaningful reform concerning animal welfare in Indonesia. We, the undersigned, call upon the government to implement laws that will abusers punished for harming innocent animals. We also urge politicians to outlaw the dog meat trade as soon as possible and impose strict penalties against those who fail to respect it.
